Muhsineen – those who’re excellent in their conduct

Muhsineen is the plural of the word Muhsin and comes from the root verb Ihsan.

The literal meaning of the word Ihsan is “to do something perfectly, in the best way or, to be excellent in conduct”. This applies to all actions.

So, the literal meaning of the word Muhsin would “those who do things in the best way or excellent in their conduct”.  Instead of just showing empathy or sympathy, a Muhsin serves or deal with the creation out of sincere compassion and from the sense of responsibility; not for recognition, material gains or for self-interest.

The Holy Qur’an talks about One God and one human family. It stresses that righteousness is not in precise observance of the rituals but in acts of compassion and kindness.  It says that the litmus test for true belief and genuine worship is that it leads to compassionate living. There are 200 words in the Qur’an that emphasise the importance of justice, kindness, compassion and good conduct.

Below are some of the verses that particularly use the word Muhsineen, generally translated as ‘the doer of good’ :

Who spend during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the doers of good.

-Family of Imran, Al’e – Imran, Qur’an 3:134

And who is better in faith than he who submits himself to Allah, and he is a doer of good, and follows the religion of Abraham, the upright? And Allah took Abraham for a special friend.

-The Women, An-Nisa, Qur’an 4:125

And We gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – all [of them] We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the doers of good.

-The Cattle, Al-An’am, Qur’an 6:84

And create not disorder in the earth after it has been set in order, and call upon Him in fear and hope. Surely, the mercy of Allah is near unto those who do good.

– The Realm Between Heaven and Hell, Al-Araf, Qur’an 7:56

And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he pleased. We touch with Our mercy whom We please, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

– Joseph, Yusuf ,Qur’an 12:56

Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
